FMCSA Revokes Nine Electronic Logging Devices: What Motor Carriers Need to Know

In a significant regulatory move, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has announced the removal of nine electronic logging devices (ELDs) from its list of registered devices. This decision, made public on February 12, 2026, underscores the agency's commitment to safety and compliance within the trucking industry.

According to FMCSA Administrator Derek D. Barrs, “If an ELD isn’t meeting federal requirements, it’s taken out of service — plain and simple.” This statement highlights the agency's zero-tolerance approach toward devices that fail to meet the minimum standards outlined in Title 49 CFR Appendix A to Subpart B of Part 395.

The following is a summary of the revoked devices and their respective providers:

Replacement Timeline

Motor carriers currently using any of the revoked ELDs have a 60-day window to comply with regulations. Here’s what is required:

1. Immediately Discontinue Use: Motor carriers must stop using the revoked ELDs and revert to using paper logs or logging software to document required hours of service.

2. Replacement: By April 14, 2026, carriers must replace the revoked devices with compliant ELDs sourced from the FMCSA's Registered Devices list.

Guidance for Safety Officials

FMCSA has advised safety officials to refrain from citing drivers for ELD-related violations during the 60-day grace period. Instead, they are encouraged to request the driver’s paper logs or use any available logging software or ELD display as a temporary measure to review hours-of-service data.

However, it is critical to note that beginning April 14, 2026, drivers found using any of the revoked devices will be treated as operating without an ELD, leading to potential citations and being placed out-of-service under the guidelines of the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA).

Compliance Encouragement

FMCSA emphasizes that carriers should not wait until the last minute to act. If the ELD provider addresses the deficiencies and brings the device into compliance, it could be reinstated on the registered list. However, the agency strongly suggests that motor carriers proactively seek solutions to avoid complications down the line.

For updates and further guidance on ELD requirements, motor carriers can visit the FMCSA’s official ELD website.

As the trucking industry continues to evolve, maintaining compliance with federal regulations is crucial not only for fleet operations but also for ensuring the safety of all road users.
